Great Southern Western Australia
Towerhill Estate was established in 1993 in the heart of the Mt Barker region of Western Australia where mild wet winters, well drained soils and warm, dry summers yield outstanding cool climate wines. Towerhill Estate excels in producing medal winning wines from low yielding fruit handpicked from responsibly tended, non-irrigated vines.
The weather is the powerful determinant of the character of the vineyard, the region and the wines created. The Hill is to the west of the vineyard so catching the first morning sunlight and then strikes a strong profile against the setting sun each evening.
The vineyard sits astride softly undulating slopes in the lee of Tower Hill; a landmark backdrop to the town of Mt. Barker 4km away.
The vineyards in this area, which is the coolest of Western Australia’s viticultural areas, share a similar maritime influenced Mediterranean climate to Margaret River although with more sunshine and slightly less rainfall. This cool Mt Barker subregion is important as the origin of the Great Southern wine industry being the first recommended as ideal for grape growing by the American viticulturalist Harold Olmo.
Our vineyard is to be found west of the Albany Highway on gently undulating ground distinguished by its gravelly loams called "marri" after the redgum eucalypts that favour this soil typified by good drainage qualities and low fertility.
