Clare South Australia
Olssens of Watervale is a family owned and run wine business. The wines are produced from grapes grown in our own vineyards in the areas of Watervale and Auburn in the beautiful Clare Valley, South Australia. The Olssen philosophy has always been to make limited quantities of interesting, high quality wines. With this in mind, a wide range of grape varieties has been established in the 32 ha of family vineyards. These include the usual varieties grown in the Clare Valley such as Riesling, Shiraz and Caberne
The soils are mainly shallow red clay loam over limestone or shale. The long-term Watervale yearly rainfall is 650 mm and slightly lower around Auburn in the southern part of the Clare Valley. Most of the rain occurs in the colder months of the year but some thunderstorm activity does happen in the summer. The Watervale vineyard is approximately 430m above sea level while Bass Hill Vineyard (Auburn) is between 360m and 385m.
